About

Biography

I’m Roy.

Work

I’m a computer scientist who enjoys playing with embedded software
systems. Prior research includes developing a dynamic operating system
targeting bottom tier wireless sensing hardware, exploring language
techniques and tools to statically track dynamically allocated
resources, and finding better ways to extract log data from resource
constrained devices.

After finishing up my Ph.D. from the Networked and Embedded Systems
Laboratory at UCLA, I spent a chunk of time working on a small software
startup. The project developed front- and back-end infrastructure for
gathering, aggregating, and displaying user submitted geographic data on
top of digital maps.

These days I can be found continuing to work away on my prior logging
research, teaching the occasional class to high school students, and
contemplating what my next job should be.

Play

I’m a lover of tea with a personal emphasis on Chinese oolongs and pu
erh. My time with tea has included a stint writing tea reviews,
occasional weekends working the bar at a tea shop, and countless hours
sitting around countless teas chatting with friends. Beyond Camellia
sinensis I’ve been known to have a soft spot for Yerba Mate, but don’t
tell anyone.

I’ve long been captivated by the game of Go and look forward to once
again finding a local community of Go players. Until then I can
occasionally be found playing on KGS as I struggle into the single digit
kyu rankings.
